An opening party for the public

28.11.2022 | After a 10-month construction phase, the Zugerberg Railway will resume operations on 11 December 2022. The reopening will be celebrated together with the public. Free travel for all on this day. A wide range of food and drink as well as entertainment for younger guests will round off the opening celebration.

For many people, the Zugerberg has been their favourite recreational area since childhood. The experience begins with boarding the Zugerberg railway at the Schönegg valley station. The funicular ride to the mountain station takes around 7 minutes and takes guests up a distance of 1280 metres. The view over forests, the lake and the nearby mountains is always enchanting. It's no wonder that many people simply missed the ride up Zug's local mountain during the 10-month interruption. That's why the reopening is being celebrated together with the local population.

A celebration for the public

On 11 December 2022, the Zugerberg Railway is inviting the public to take a ride on the new high route up the Zugerberg. Free travel for all on the opening day. On the forecourt of the Montana Institute, various food stalls (barbecue, fish crispies, chestnuts and drinks) will ensure an enjoyable day. The Vordergeissboden and Hintergeissboden restaurants will also be open. A surprise awaits the little guests: Zugiblubbi and Jolanda Steiner welcome the children to a storytelling session in the Montana school building every hour from 1 pm.

Contemplation in the evening hours

If you are looking for peace and quiet, visit the Zugerberg after dusk. From 11 December until 8 January 2023, the candles along the Trail of Lights will be lit every evening as darkness falls. The trail leads from the Zugerberg mountain station through the beautiful winter landscape. After around 1.2 kilometres, you reach the Zugiblubbi house near the Schattwäldli playground, where the illuminated nativity scene is located. The Zugerberg Railway team created the illuminated trail two years ago and it has become an indispensable part of the pre-Christmas season.

Construction work successfully completed

The 116-year-old route of the Zugerberg railway had to be renovated and was almost completely dismantled. The new track, which has been raised by up to 60 centimetres, runs in the same place. Thanks to the elevation, the availability of the railway is improved even during heavy snowfall and snow clearance work along the route is reduced. The extensive construction work was completed in just 10 months, specifically from 7 February to 10 December 2022. Such a comprehensive renovation in topographically difficult terrain is always a challenge. The results today are all the more pleasing: The renovation went according to plan throughout. The targets set in terms of cost and quality were met and the work was completed on time and without any accidents. This is thanks to the professional co-operation of all the companies involved, the Zug Corporation and the authorities, as well as the great commitment of the Zugerberg Railway team.
